Finished Short Film Polly: By Holly (UPDATED)

Our Short film was successfully uploaded to youtube and is in High Quality

Updated Final Short Film 'Polly'
With New Alternative Sound Track

  • The Video Above is the Short Film with a non copyright protected sound track. We origionally made our short film with a different non-diegetic sound track (As Posted Below), however there were some issues involving copy right and so to ensure there was no problems, I made a version using Royalty Free music.
  • As it was hard for us to meet up out of lesson time, I had to do all of the new non-diegetic sound editing. As the garage band tracks are limited, I had to look up royalty free music online (on sites the college had given us)- These were Jamendo and Incompetech .
  • I found 2 tracks (1 was a repetative orchestral sound track that runs throughout day 1 and day 2, and the other was a meloncholic, slow pianno track for the end scene).

Above is the Screen shot showing the garage band file I created once it was complete. Here you can see the variety of non diegetic and diegetic sound tracks I have used and also how I have had to adjust the volume of different layers at different points.

The 2 Tracks we used off Jamendo:
  1. Celestial Aeon Project- Hope for Rebirth
  2. Kero Dean- Falling
First Version of Short Film

Copy Right Issues with First Version:
  • There were however some Issues with the non diegetic sound track we used in our short film, the sound track we used was found on youtube which means it could have been copy right protected. Although we made several changes to try and avoid infringing copyright laws, such as using a combination of different sound tracks and editing these in garage band.
  • When the video was uploaded it was also temporarily removed, so youtube could review it and check that we were not using copyright protected music, however it was later reactivated-suggesting that we were not infringing copy right laws.

However We did decide to change the non-diegetic music tracks just to be safe.

    2. You do empathise with this character as you follow her story of loneliness and you feel happy when she finds a friend and you feel sad when it wasn't really her friend.
The storyline is effective but because of the slow storyline it gets quite boring but there are shots that keep your attention and you don't feel that you want to turn the film off you are just waiting for something to happen.
I don't feel that there is a strong representation of the girl being a certain stereotype or does it show a a certain representation of femininity just that shes a normal girl that wants some friends.
I love the technical and use of stop frame animation to show time going past and her imagination drifting off while playing with the unicorns.
I think your use of mise en scene is good as its well lit and also because the room is so empty it helps reinforce the loneliness.
I also think your film is successful at reaching the target audience as some teens may relate to it and most will feel sympathy for the character.

      1. Do you understand the story?
Yes, I understand the story and how she has no friends, and that time is passing by very slowly (shown by the watch) because she has no one to meet up with, and also her life is very repetitive. But then when the guy talks to her, she has hope. But then he says sorry thought it was someone else, she loses hope, and goes back to her old routine.
      2. Do you empathise with the character?
I understand her feeling wanted, and to want to have friends, but because she doesn’t, you can tell by the way she looks bored.
      3. Camera & editing
I like the transition of the songs, how at the beginning and the end it’s very mellow, high pitched, but then in the middle it becomes more quick and that we can feel her hope and it almost wants to make you cry of happiness because she has finally found someone, but then the music changes and you feel sympathy.
      4. Target Audience 14-20
It does target 14-20 year olds, however I think it could be targeted younger, maybe 13-18 year olds, because they are more likely to go on Facebook and be able to relate to this characters situation
      5. Mise en scene
The colours of the room show that it is a young person’s bedroom, not a 20+ year old bedroom, and also the way she is dressed, and what she plays with – slinky, chatter teeth, unicorns. There is also hardly anything in the room, no pictures of friends, which helps to show that she is lonely.
      Overall, really liked it!

      1. Do you understand the story?
yes, I understood the story and how the main character is very alone as she has no friends, this is shown by time passing by very slowly, as there's a constant focus on the clock throughout a day. This also comes across as a bit of a routine as she wakes up puts on her clothes then wastes time as she doesn't have anyone to talk to. Then when she finds that someone who wants to be her friend she changes and becomes very talkative. But when he says 'Sorry i thought it was someone else' she returns to her normal repetitive routine.
      2. Do you empathise with the character?
Yes i feel you empathise with the character as you can see how lonely she has become. She just wants to have friends and when she suddenly has one, you feel happy for her. Then when you find out he's not really her friend you feel sorry for her as it's like she's not wanted.
Also the stop animation was definitely very successful as it showed the passing of time aswell as the characters imagination coming through her boredom. There's also a good use of a music as it represents how the character is feeling throughout the short film. For example when she finds a friend it's a much faster pace then at the beginning, then towards the end the music changes to make you sympathise for the character.
From the Mise en scene you can clearly see how bored she has become, for example her bedroom and the lack of clutter and use of emptiness involved really represents the characters loneliness, However you can still tell that it's a young teenage girls bedroom.
I feel you also appealed to the right target audience as many teenagers will enjoy this short film.
      Overall good short film!
